Pole tents are supported on center poles and side poles. The side poles (and ultimately the whole tent) is secured in place using side ropes (or “side lines”) attached to metal stakes driven into the ground. (Pole tents therefore differ from frame tents in that frame tents are self supporting on an aluminum box or pipe framework).

In most cases you will require a reasonably area of flat lawn or turf to erect a pole tent. Pole tents can be erected on an asphalt concrete surface, but keep in mind the metal stakes need to be hammered into the surface which can be time consuming and may leave some damage afterwards.

Frame Tents

A frame tent is a framework of aluminum pipes that support the fabric roof and define the structure's shape. The rigid framework allows the tent to stand without additional support, but requires the same anchoring system as a pole tent to hold it securely in place, using either stakes, anchors or water barrels.
